Las puertas del vagón se abrieron y la voz pituda y bien impostada de una mujer empezó a gritar ofreciendo su mercancía:
“¡De a cinco, de a cinco! Malvavisco cubierto de chocolateee! De a cincooo!
Abrí el libro que me disponía a leer mientras percibía el grito cada vez más cerca, moviéndose entre las demás mujeres que iban ocupando los asientos.
-De acinco…! Y de repente la mujer paró de gritar y quedó justo frente a mí, agarrándose del tubo superior y mostrándome –sin querer- el ombligo que asomaba por debajo de su corta playera. Con la otra mano, sujetaba fuerte una bolsa de mano rosa mexicano, donde llevaba la mercancía. Me di cuenta porque era tanta su ansiedad por “mimetizarse” con las demás pasajeras que sus rodillas pegaban casi con las mías. Casi al mismo tiempo, como sabueso, una mujer policía vestida con un chaleco azul marino antibalas pasó tras de ella mientras la vendedora ponía el cuerpo en tensión y miraba sin parpadear hacia afuera, hacia el andén.
La mujer policía se alejó un poco más allá de la siguiente puerta. Había tantas mujeres que era difícil ubicarla. Una señora que iba a mi lado le dijo suavemente a la vendedora:
-Páseme su bolsa-.
La mujer le pasó rápidamente la mercancía. Sentí desde ese momento un silencio cómplice con la ambulante y la otra ocupante porque no dije nada. Y ninguna de las otras mujeres que nos rodeaban tampoco abrieron la boca. El metro avanzaba ya hacia la estación Obrera. Chabacano. La Viga. La vendedora ambulante no quería ni siquiera voltear y seguía aferrada al tubo. Yo estaba intrigada por ver si seguía la policía en el vagón y si la había detectado.
-¿Cree que ya se haya bajado? –le pregunté para provocar la plática.
-¡No sé! Pero no quiero que me agarren. ¡Si me agarra son 36 horas de arresto y me quitan la mercancía, que es peor! Y tengo que ir por mi hija a la escuela -me respondió con voz baja.
-Lo bueno es que la vi-dijo la señora de unos sesenta años que iba a mi lado.
-¡Sí! ¡Gracias a usted por ayudarme! Le dijo sonriendo la ambulante.
-No, gracias a Dios porque me puso en su camino- dijo con mucha convicción la de junto. Tanta seguridad en su voz me hizo pensar que por lo visto, no las traía de todas conmigo, porque a mí nadie me habló ni me puso alerta.
– Si yo pudiera, me buscaba un trabajo, ¡pero no puedo! -dijo como disculpándose la mujer de mediana edad, morena-. Salvo su bolsa cargada de malvaviscos y su voz aguda, no había nada que la delatara en su aspecto físico. Como cualquier vecina.
Dice que han andado los policías muy duros, haciendo redadas, y que les quitan todo lo que llevan.
-Lo que pasa es que tengo una hija, ya mero sale, va en la secundaria 22 ¡y me preocupa! Anda medio mal… explica sin que nadie le pregunte-. Es que es medio rara, ya van dos veces que se corta (y con el dedo índice de la mano derecha hace un movimiento perpendicular sobre la muñeca izquierda). ¿Se imagina si me agarran? ¿Quién va por ella?
-Bueno, le digo conciliadora, ya ve cómo son las adolescentes…
-No, es que ésta sí que está mal y luego mi mamá no puede ir por ella, ya está muy grande…
-¿Y no tiene esposo que le ayude?- le agrego.
¡No! ¡Nos separamos! ¿Hermanos? Sí, tengo uno pero tiene problemas de discapacidad…Y mis otros hermanos pues tienen sus propias cosas…
La señora que va junto a mi le dice que no se preocupe, que para que no vaya a pasarle nada, mejor se baje con ella en la estación UAM-I y que la siga al paradero, que allí le dará sus cosas.
Me cuenta que hay muchos que se meten al metro y que van drogados, pero no, ella no hace eso y necesita vender la mercancía para llevar a su hija al sicólogo y otros gastos. Ya para entonces hemos pasado todas las estaciones que van por arriba hacia metro Constitución y la vendedora no se atreve a moverse de su lugar frente a mí.
-No voltee a mirar para allá-le advierte la enviada del señor- porque ellos saben detectar si los ve de frente-le dice casi en susurro. La miro con el rabillo del ojo para checar si está bromeando, pero ¡no! Es tanta su seriedad que asusta más que la mujer policía, creo.
Finalmente la vendedora de vientre abultado que enseña el ombligo, exhala profundamente en la estación Iztapalapa. Sin decir nada, camina despacio entre las mujeres y verifica hacia el final del pasillo mientras la gente desaloja en gran parte el vagón. Regresa y asegura que vio bajar a la mujer policía. Agradece de nuevo a la sexagenaria su amabilidad y apoyo y le pide su bolsa. A la siguiente estación se despide y le deseamos suerte. El silencio de los ambulantes, que ha durado todo el camino, es roto por otra voz:
“¡Lleve sus Jols, Para esa garganta irritada, para esa garganta seca!, Lleve sus Jols!”
La sexagenaria y yo volteamos a mirarnos. Sonreímos. Otro ciclo comienza.
