Palo de lluvia, es un instrumento de percusión  que data de la época de los aztecas. Los indígenas pensaban que el crear un sonido que se asemejara a la lluvia traería tormentas a las comunidades el cual tenían que ver con sus tradiciones religiosas.

El palo de lluvia se construye con los siguientes materiales dependiendo las costumbres culturales y los materiales que se den en las diferentes comunidades, estos son: cactus y sus espinas para hacer el efecto de sonido de lluvia,  cañas de bambú para hacer el tubo. También se puede hacer de una forma más sencilla: con bolitas de alambre y cartón reciclado, entre otros materiales. El tubo mide aproximadamente 80 cm.

Su funcionamiento es el siguiente: es un instrumento idiófono, esto quiere decir que el sonido se produce por medio de la vibración relacionado con el material que está hecho.

Existen algunos palos de lluvia para distintos usos por ejemplo si un palo de lluvia mide 80 cm es utilizado para algunas ceremonias o rituales, en cambio las que son de 40 cm son utilizados con fines terapéuticos porque el sonido es relajante y evita el estrés.

En algunos eventos musicales introducen dicho instrumento para que haya una mezcla de sonidos y con este efecto de lluvia la  melodía tenga ese toque diferente y con algo nuevo de escuchar.
