En el marco del Día Internacional de la mujer, se llevará a cabo el primer paseo espacial por un equipo conformado únicamente por mujeres, algo que no se había visto en la historia

Un paseo espacial o una actividad extravehicular –EVA (Extra-Vehicular Activity) en inglés o VKD (ВнеКорабельная Деятельность) en ruso– de acuerdo con la NASA, es como se le llama a la experiencia que tienen los astronautas al salir de un vehículo espacial. Estos paseos se realizan con el fin de hacer experimentos en el espacio exterior que permitan conocerlo mejor y con ello poder generar avances en la ciencia.

En marzo de 1965 se dio el primer paseo espacial, la misión fue llamada “Vosjod 2” en la cual Aleksei Leonov, cosmonauta soviético, experimentó una estancia de aproximadamente 12 minutos fuera de la nave espacial y comprobó la seguridad del traje que llevaba.

Luego de este exitoso paseo, muchos otros y otras astronautas han podido vivir la emocionante experiencia y conocer de cerca las condiciones del espacio. Muchos paseos han sido protagonizados por hombres; por ejemplo, el del 3 de junio de 1965 por el astronauta Edward White en el Gemini 4 o el del 21 de julio de 1969 en la misión Apolo 11 realizada por Neil Armstrong y Buzz Aldrin. También se han conformado equipos mixtos, pero nunca algo como lo que está por ocurrir.

Específicamente 54 años después de la primera actividad extravehicular y 35 años más tarde de que Svetlana Savitskaya fuera la primera mujer en participar en un paseo espacial, según The Washington Post, la NASA confirmó el primer paseo espacial por un grupo compuesto únicamente por mujeres.

 El equipo estará liderado por las astronautas Anne McClain y Christina Koch. El equipo de apoyo también está integrado por mujeres: Mary Lawrence actuará como la directora de vuelo principal, Jackie Kagey será la controladora de paseos espaciales principal y Kristen Facciol también apoyará como controladora de paseos especiales.

La tarea que llevara a cabo este equipo es muy importante, pues actualizaran unas baterías de la Estación Espacial Internacional (ISS). Experiencia que las llevará a dejar una huella muy significativa en la historia, ya que tuvieron que pasar 213 paseos espaciales para poder ver una misión ejecutada completamente por mujeres.
